The tattoo may be finished, but your skin is just getting started on its healing journey. Whether it’s your first tattoo or your fifteenth, taking care of fresh ink is essential to keep it healthy, vibrant, and looking its best for years to come.

At Liquid Color Tattoo Studio, we recommend a simple, proven aftercare routine that combines silver wound gel and A&D ointment to support your skin from day one. It can get pretty dry here in Fort Collins, and we find this is the best way to combat that and help your tattoo heal quickly.

Day 1: Fresh Ink & First Steps

After your session, your artist will clean and bandage your tattoo. Leave this bandage on for the recommended time—usually up to 48 hours—to protect the area and allow initial healing to begin.

Once you remove the bandage (try removing in the shower for less mess), gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free, gentle soap. Pat dry with a clean paper towel—don’t rub or use cloth towels that might hold bacteria.

Days 1–5: Silver Wound Gel + A&D Combo

For the first 3 to 5 days, we recommend using silver wound gel and A&D together—this combo gives your tattoo the best of both worlds: antimicrobial protection and moisture support.

Here’s how:

  1. Apply a thin layer of silver wound gel to your clean, dry tattoo.

  2. Let it air dry completely—this usually takes just a few minutes.

  3. Once dry, apply a very light layer of A&D ointment over the area.

Do this 2 to 3 times a day. Your goal is to keep the tattoo lightly moisturized, but never greasy or overly wet.

After Day 5: Switch to Just A&D or an ointment/cream/lotion/oil of your choice

Once the initial healing phase passes and your tattoo begins to flake or peel, you can switch to using only A&D ointment. Continue applying a thin layer 2–3 times daily until the tattoo is fully healed—usually around two weeks total. We have clients who also switch to other treatments like vitamin E, coconut oil, fragrance-free lotion, and even tallow! You know your skin best, so choose what works best for your skin, as long as it's gentle and doesn't aggravate your skin or clog your pores.

Things to Avoid While Healing

  • No soaking: Skip swimming, baths, or hot tubs while your tattoo is healing.

  • No scratching or peeling: It’s tempting, but picking can damage the ink and slow healing.

  • No sun exposure or fake tanning: Fresh tattoos are extra sensitive—cover up and avoid direct sunlight. Skip the faux tanner for a bit too.

  • No harsh products: Stick to fragrance-free, gentle soaps and ointments.

Healing Signs to Watch For

Mild redness, itching, or flaking are all normal signs of healing. If you notice anything unusual—like excessive swelling, redness, pus, or a rash—reach out to your medical provider.
